Overview
Summary
Mobile editing of Office documents via WOPI is not supported when using an on-premise server. This is due to recent changes in Microsoft’s environment and domain trust requirements. At this time, there are no planned enhancements to enable WOPI-based mobile editing for on-premise deployments.
Affected Environment
- M-Files Mobile App
- On-premise M-Files Servers
- Office for Mobile (Microsoft O365)
Issue
Users attempting to edit Office documents through the mobile app while connected to an on-premise server are unable to do so. The WOPI (Web Application Open Platform Interface) integration fails to launch mobile editing.
Cause
Microsoft has updated the requirements for WOPI endpoints so that server addresses must belong to Microsoft’s trusted domain list.
- The M-Files Cloud vault domain is included in Microsoft’s trusted domains.
- On-premise servers use custom domain names, and it is not feasible to add all customer-specific domains to Microsoft’s trusted list.
- As a result, mobile WOPI editing is not available for on-premise environments.
Solution
Current Workaround
Users can edit documents on mobile by using the Document Provider–based workflow, where editing is initiated from within the Office application rather than the M-Files Mobile app.
Instructions for this method are available in:

Future Plans
At this time, there are no plans to make WOPI mobile editing work with on-premise servers.
However, this may be reconsidered if there is significant customer demand.
Additional Notes
- This limitation affects only mobile editing. Desktop and cloud environments are not impacted.
- Viewing documents on mobile remains fully functional.
