M-Files Desktop Co-Authoring: "Master Storage call failed" after an automatic state transition

Last updated on 21 October 2025

Desktop Co-authoring

Overview

When Desktop Co-Authoring is in use and an automatic state transition occurs, you may have ended up in a situation where the document cannot be edited. More specifically, if a document has unsaved changes and the state transition is not triggered by a change in the object itself but by something else, like completing a separate assignment, the object version produced by the state transition cannot be checked out or co-authored. M-Files does not recognize it as a co-authorable document.

When you double-click the document, it is expected to open in co-authoring, but it will ask you to check it out instead. If you select to check-out, there will be an error: "Unspecified error. (Master Storage call failed with status: 500 Internal Server Error. Correlation Id: <A GUID value>) (0x80004005)"

Solution

This has been corrected in M-Files Online Sep '25 SR1 (25.9.15198.6) released to M-Files Cloud on 28th September 2025.
