AD FS Authentication

Overview

SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) is an XML-based standard for authenticating a client and exchanging authentication data. Most commonly SAML is used for enabling single sign-on (SSO) between services.
In SAML v2.0, authentication Service Provider (SP), which in this case is M-Files, requests the Identity Provider (IdP, for example Azure AD) for a SAML assertion, which basically is an XML document that contains the required authentication data. SP verifies the XML, and a client with a successfully verified SAML v2.0 assertion can be logged in.

Statement

M-Files has stated that SAML 2.0 authentication will be no more developed by M-Files Online technology after November 2020. However, SAML 2.0 capability is not disabled in the product.

Note that M-Files no longer supports SAML starting from December 2020. Also, the M-Files Mobile, Web and Desktop clients do not support SAML at all. The only clients that have had prior implementation of SAML are the Classic Web and Classic Desktop clients, and they also do not support SAML as of December 2020.

If you are still using SAML, we strongly recommend using other authentication technologies, such as oAuth 2.0/Open ID Connect.
