Overview / Work Notes
NOTE: These instructions pertain only to M-Files Desktop. For more information, including other clients, please see Specifying the Automatic Logout Time in M-Files - https://m-files.force.com/s/article/mfiles-ka-44709.
You can set M-Files Desktop to automatically log users out of vaults after a certain period of inactivity. This is useful when you have concurrent licenses in use and want to release them automatically. Note that the automatic logout applies to all users regardless of their license type.
Solution / Workaround
M-Files March '23 Update and later:
The automatic logout options can be defined under Advanced Vault Settings > Configuration > Client > Desktop > Automatic Logout. If you haven't yet enabled client setting management in Advanced Vault Settings, you need to first go to Advanced Vault Settings > Configuration > Client and set "Manage Client Settings Centrally" to "Yes".
Users will get the new settings once they log into the vault with M-Files Desktop the next time.
M-Files February '23 Update and older:
NOTE: This setting will not log out users that have documents in checked out state.
Apply the following registry key (keys can be automatically distributed with a Group Policy)
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motive\M-Files\<version>\Client\MFClient
Value name: AutomaticLogoutTimeoutInMinutes
Value type: REG_DWORD (DWORD 32-bit Value)
Value data: Minutes to the logout (e.g. 120 = 2 hours). Minimum value is 1 minute.
After setting the key, restart the workstation and open a vault. After the defined interval M-Files will notify you that it is going to log you out and then proceed to logout.
Additional settings (optional):
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motive\M-Files\<version>\Client\MFClient
Value name: IgnoreOpenReadonlyHandlesOnAutoLogout
Value type: REG_DWORD
Description: When this is set to 1, documents opened in read-only mode do not stop a forced logout.
This setting is supported in M-Files 21.9.10629.5 and later.
Troubleshooting
