Overview
Permissions dictate who can see or change an object. Lack of permissions are many times the answer to questions like "Why I can't see a document?" or "Why I can't change the properties of this document?".More about permissions can be found in the user guide: Object Permissions (m-files.com)
Solution
To see the permissions of an object you need to click the permissions button from the bottom left side of the metadata card in M-Files client. It is marked with a Lock-symbol and a description of the current permissions:After clicking a new window opens, where the permissions can be seen. Two things are listed:
- Where the permissions come from (Selected permission settings)
- What the effective permissions are (Effective permissions)
Selected permission settings inform you where the permissions come from. In this example the permissions come from a NACL (Named Access Control List) called "Full access for Testers".
It is possible for the permissions to come from multiple sources. The user needs all sources to explicitly grant the permission to have that permission.
Effective Permissions shows the current permissions. You can select what permissions are shown, for example "All users with Read access" or "All user with Edit access".
If the users name is missing from the list, they don't have the selected permissions. This is a fast way to check if a user has the required permissions for the object.
The Admin user can add users to correct user groups or Named Access Control Lists (NACLs) to gain the correct permissions.
