Overview

This article describes naming conventions when talking about indexing systems and extractors. Same names are used in both, which can lead to misconceptions.

Search engine and Extractor

IDOL, dtSearch and Smart Search are search engines, which store extracted raw-text data and retrieve it via queries. In this case search engine means the whole search system, not for example one engine of IDOL cluster.

Extractor, also called plain text extractor is a component that extracts text content from a file. After the extraction, the content will be sent to the search engine. There are two extractors: CFS and dtSearch. M-Files 20.12.x and after use dtSearch by default. CFS is currently a deprecating technology.
