Overview

Sometimes the M-Files helper process "MFStatus.exe” may stop for some reason. This can cause some issues for M-Files Desktop. This article provides more details and some suggested solutions.

Impacted Products and Versions

M-Files Desktop, all versions

Symptoms

If MFStatus.exe stops running, you might experience different types of issues. Such as:

  • M-Files Add-in in Office products does not work as expected.
  • Uploading/downloading files with M-Files Desktop stops working.
  • The M logo from the Windows Explorer taskbar notification area disappears when you hover the mouse over it.

Cause and Reason

The error occurs at random, and it can happen to a user once in a five-year period, or to another user every other day. Because of this there are number of reasons why the error would occur, and the exact root cause is difficult to pinpoint. Most common reason is some workstation errors. Sometimes a 3rd party software can cause the MFStatus.exe to shut down or even crash.

Solutions

Solution 1:

Restart the user computer.

Solution 2:

Re-install M-Files Desktop client on the user computer.

Solution 3:

Does 'MFStatus.exe' start when the user logs in?

If it doesn’t, 'MFStatus.exe' might have been removed from startup. An Antivirus software can cause this.

Antivirus software might also interfere with how M-Files works in general, so excluding M-Files program location (typically C:\Program Files\M-Files) from the Antivirus scan is advised. More information is available in our user guide: M-Files and Virus Scanning

Solution 4:

You can start MFStatus.exe manually from your install location. By default, it is C:\Program Files\M-Files\<version>\Bin\x64\MFStatus.exe

You can verify that MFStatus.exe is running from Task Manager - look for a process named "M-Files Desktop Agent"
