Availability of "Preserve Objects' Permissions" option when modifying a NACL

Overview

When you modify a named access control list, which is already used in the permissions of one or more objects, the Confirm Update dialog is shown. This dialog has two options, "Change Objects' Permissions" and "Preserve Objects' Permissions", as explained in this article. However, the "Preserve Objects' Permissions" option isn't always available. What does this depend on?


Solution

The "Preserve Objects' Permissions" option is available if the NACL is used directly in permissions of objects only. If the NACL is used in automatic permissions, it's not possible to "preserve" the current effective permissions of objects as they will change according to automatic permission configurations, and hence only the option "Change Objects' Permissions" will be available.
