Overview

This article describes what the secondary data is and what is it used for?

Solution

Data that is collected or generated by someone or something else than vault users and administrators is considered secondary data. Following information is stored into Secondary Data Location, usually in path C:\Program Files\M-Files\Server Vaults\<vault>\.

  • Search indexes for dtSearch search engine.
  • Image thumbnail files for the thumbnail view in M-Files Desktop.
  • Document preview files for the Preview tab in M-Files Desktop.
  • Log files, either .LOG or .TXT, when enabled.

The rationale of the secondary data location is to enhance the performance of the system. Because of that, the location for the secondary data should be close to the M-Files server, preferably in the server hard drive. That is also one reason, why the secondary data is not encrypted.
