Overview

You can modify named access control lists according to the instructions in the user guide. If you modify a named access control list, which is already used in the permissions of one or more objects, the dialog below is shown.

This article clarifies what exactly happens when you select one of the options.

Solution

When you select either one of the options, consider following:
  • If you wish to keep the current named access control in use in permissions of the existing objects, you should select the option "Change Objects' Permissions". The objects' effective permissions will change according to your changes to the NACL. However, the same NACL will remain in use in the objects - in that sense there will be no change.
  • If you select "Preserve Objects' Permissions", this will "preserve" specifically the current effective permissions of the existing objects. This means that the objects will not anymore use the NACL. Instead, they will get new "Custom" permissions, which match the previously used effective permissions based on the NACL. If this option is selected, it may become hard to find out which object were previously using the NACL.
The more typical case likely is to keep the current NACL in use in permissions of the existing objects and then the option "Change Objects' Permissions" should be selected. For cases where the permissions of the existing objects should be left as they are, and it's acceptable that objects will get "Custom" permissions instead of NACL based permissions, the second option is however available.

Note: If you get a Confirm Update dialog without the "Preserve Objects' Permissions" option, see this article.
