Windows Server's in-place update may break IIS configuration

Last updated on 16 March 2023

Overview

Sometimes it may be required to update of your Windows Server operating system from one version to another on the existing server computer. The update process may reset some IIS settings, which might break M-Files related configurations in IIS.

Solution

If some IIS related configuration stops working after an in-place update of Windows Server OS, refer to the documentation of the configuration that was broken and verify that each setting given in the documentation is still configured as outlined in the configuration.

For example, the OS update has been observed to disable Anonymous authentication in the RPC application in IIS, which will break M-Files Desktop's HTTPS connections. To fix the situation, enable Anonymous authentication for the RPC application in IIS Manager again, as instructed in the RPC over HTTPS configuration guide.
