Another version of this product is already installed when upgrading M-Files

Overview

When attempting to update M-Files, you may get the error message "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel."

Solution

This error will occur if you try to use an installer containing components different from the installer used for the existing M-Files installation. For example, if the Full installation package has been used for the current installation and you try to update using a Desktop Only package or Desktop and Server Tools package.

Use the installer with the same components as the current installation's installer. Even if, for example, you have installed only M-Files Desktop with the full installation package, you cannot use the Desktop Only package for the update; you must use the full installation package.

Alternatively, uninstall the current installation first. If you uninstall the current installation, make sure to check in all the checked-out objects first. Otherwise, they will be lost. Note that the document vault connections must also be recreated in this case.
