Search from external repository with special characters might fail (dtSearch indexing)

Last updated on 25 October 2022

Overview

If a vault utilizes the dtSearch indexing (which is the default indexing engine) and the vault has also an external repository, there is a chance for M-Files Desktop search to fail. That can happen if an external folder has some special UTF-8 character in its name and that external repository has been indexed with an impacted M-Files Server version. An error is visible after user executes a search to that repository and the search finds a document from that folder which has the special character in its name.

Impacted Products and Versions

M-Files Online Jun ’22 Update and older.

Symptoms

After user executes the search, they get an "unspecified error" message. This might seem to be random behavior since some of the searches might not find anything from the problematic folder name and such a search is successful. However, this error should always appear when the search finds a match from the folder with the special character.

Solution

This is a known issue, ID 163780. It was fixed in our Aug '22 Update (22.8.11717.3).

After the fix is included in your M-Files Server application version, recreate the index to correct the index that has this character error. Alternatively, you can recreate the external repository.
