Metadata is descriptive information about other information. It helps describe, organize, and find content. You use metadata every day, even if you don’t notice it.

For example:
  • A music app uses metadata like artist, album, and genre to help you find songs.
  • A library uses metadata such as title, author, and subject to organize books.
  • A search engine uses metadata to show the most relevant websites.

In M-Files, a contract document can have metadata like customer name, contract type, and expiration date. This helps you find the contract without knowing where it is saved.

Benefits of metadata

Metadata makes information easier to find.

In M-Files, you don't need to remember where a files is saved. You only need to know something about the file, for example its name, type, or related project. M-Files uses metadata to show you the correct file in just a few steps. This is different from older systems, where you had to know the exact folder or location of a file.
