Changing Auto Population of a Built-in or Default Property

Overview

If a default property such as 'Name' or 'Title' is being incorrectly auto-populated when dragging and dropping (or saving) a file or email into M-Files there is a way to fix or correct the behavior.

Solution

The 'name or title' property is a built-in property within M-Files.  In order to keep it from auto-populating, it will need to be removed from the Class.  Then you should be able to create a new property called "Name" or "Title" (marking the data type as text) and add it to the class.  For best practice, try these steps below:

Open M-Files Admin console and expand the vault in question.
Click Metadata Structure (Flat View).
Click 'Classes'
Double click the Class in question.
Underneath the properties box, click the 'Add' button.

Click the New Property button (create the new property and set the data type to 'Text')- Click OK.

Click the Add button (the new property is now part of the Class).Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated

Mark the checkbox for Required (if required).

Move the new property up or down using the arrows to set where on the Metadata card the new property should sit.

Highlight the old property 'name or title' and click on the Remove button.

This will effectively shut down the 'name or title' property causing the issue.

Alternatively, you may have set the actual name of the Class to 'Name or Title' and that's what may need to be turned off or changed.  In that case, follow the same process and do not click on the 'set as name' button.
